Leaning Into Strengths: Reflections on Four Years with McLeod For Tomorrow

May 5th was my 4 year anniversary as Program Coordinator for McLeod For Tomorrow. Reflecting on my time in this position is very powerful for me. I’m struck by how much growth can occur in just a few years—both within a community and personally. Over four cohort cycles, I’ve had the privilege of supporting emerging leaders. I have witnessing the power of connection, admired the spark of those around me, and discovered just how impactful investing in your community can be.

McLeod For Tomorrow’s mission to shape McLeod County’s future by connecting communities and developing leaders has been more than just a mission statement on our website—it’s our everyday goal. Working closely with participants, board members, and local partners has taught me that leadership doesn’t always look the same. It isn’t always having a ‘good title’ or standing at the front of the room. Sometimes, it looks like listening closely, adapting quickly, or working together toward a common purpose.

Discovering Your Personal Leadership Path

As a Millennial, I have always been a fan of personality quizzes. Yes, I was the person who would take the quizzes in the early Facebook days on “What kind of Pizza would you be?” or something equally ridiculous. It might sound a bit cliche, but one of the most transformative parts of my leadership journey came through the Clifton Strengths assessment, which helped me name and embrace what skills comes naturally to me: Futuristic, Adaptability, Connectedness, Empathy, and Strategic. These strengths became more than just words—they became tools I used daily in the nonprofit sector.

Personal Strengths

  • Futuristic thinking allowed me to always keep the bigger picture in mind—where are we trying to go as an organization? Thinking big challenged me to expand further. Where are we trying to go as a county? As a cohort? Where am I trying to go as a person? This perspective helped shape my own thought process that didn’t just serve the present needs in my position but attempted to inspired participants to envision and lead into the future.

  • Adaptability proved invaluable, especially in a field that requires flexibility. Whether it was responding to participant needs, adjusting events, or navigating the unexpected (hello, pandemic), this strength allowed me to stay grounded and responsive.

  • Connectedness showed up in the relationships I built with people I’d never met before—residents, leaders, and volunteers from across McLeod County. I came to see every new connection as part of a larger, meaningful web. Community-building wasn’t just a job requirement; it became a favorite component of what we do!

  • Empathy allowed me to meet people where they were, understand their unique leadership journeys, and work hard to attempt to create a safe space for vulnerability and growth. This allowed me to put my own personal spin on the program itself.

  • Strategic thinking challenges the norm and assists in navigating challenges and opportunities. Always asking, What’s the best path forward? Working on this mindset allowed me to collaborate effectively with our board of directors to bring clarity and direction to our shared vision.

Working with a board of directors for the first time was a major area of growth for me. I learned to trust my voice in new ways, take initiative, and contribute to high-level conversations with confidence. Being part of a leadership program while growing as a leader myself created a unique opportunity to grow along with a group of likeminded folks. I am always learning, even as I facilitated learning for others.

Reflecting Back

As I look back on these four years, I feel immense gratitude. For the people I’ve met, the lessons I’ve learned, and the strength I’ve discovered within myself. McLeod For Tomorrow has taught me that leadership is not about having all the answers—it’s about being willing to grow, connect, and lead with heart.

Reflecting on my journey with McLeod For Tomorrow leaves me filled with gratitude for the incredible community of McLeod County. Your warmth, openness, and unwavering support have been a constant source of inspiration. From the first day I stepped into this role, I felt welcomed and valued, and that sense of belonging has fueled my passion for our shared mission.

If you are considering stepping in a leadership role, I challenge you to get involved. I encourage you to take that leap. McLeod For Tomorrow offers a unique opportunity to connect with others, develop your leadership skills, and make a tangible impact. Applications for the next cohort are open each summer from May 1 to July 15.

If you’re looking to get involved sooner, there are numerous ways to contribute. Consider volunteering with local organizations, joining a board, or participating in community events. Your time and talents are invaluable assets to our collective growth.

Thank you, McLeod County, for being a place where leaders are nurtured, connections are made, and futures are shaped. I am proud to have been a part of this journey and look forward to seeing the continued growth, together.
