In an increasingly interconnected world, leadership is no longer confined to the big urban centers or corporate boardrooms. I would argue that rural leadership in some ways is more important than urban leadership. While MFT has been in existence since 2007, leadership programs continue to emerge as vital platforms for nurturing the unique potential of individuals in rural communities. Participating in a rural leadership program offers a range of benefits that go beyond personal development, positive impacts to communities and fostering sustainable growth. While we are biased, here’s a closer look at the many advantages of being a part of a rural leadership program.
1. Personal Growth and Skill Development
Enhanced Leadership Skills: Participants learn essential leadership skills. These leadership concepts include effective communication, Cultural Agility, Personal leadership strengths, and conflict resolution. These skills are invaluable for personal and professional growth.
I thought the whole leadership development program was beneficial for personal growth as well as growth in my occupation. When you find out more about yourself and how to recognize other types of communication styles, personality styles and understanding better why people operate as they do makes you more understanding on how to work with others who differ then oneself.

Networking Opportunities: Rural leadership programs often connect participants with like-minded individuals, community members, and industry experts. These networks can open doors to new opportunities and collaborations.
I enjoyed making connections with new people and learning more about businesses throughout the county. It was also helpful to learn more about local resources.

2. Community Empowerment
Stronger Community Ties: Leadership programs encourage participants to work closely with community members, fostering a sense of unity and collective purpose. By focusing on what means the most to the specific community, community empowerment offers a focused approach to its impact. This strengthened social fabric can lead to more cohesive and resilient communities.
Civic Engagement: By participating in these programs, individuals are often inspired to take on more active roles in local governance, non-profits and other organizations. This increased civic engagement can lead to more inclusive and representative decision-making while increasing the connection to your community.
I enjoyed learning about the many great things our community has to offer, and this allows me to be more involved in the community and help get others involved.

3. Economic Development
The economic impact of rural leadership is far better quantified by University of Minnesota Extension Senior economic impact analyst, Brigid Tuck.

4. Enhanced Quality of Life
Improved Services: Effective leadership can lead to the development and improvement of essential services tailored to the unique needs of the community. This directly enhances the quality of life for community members in a personalized way. It also allows leaders to make an impact in a way that they are passionate about.
Before joining McLeod For Tomorrow, I didn’t have any community connections. I now know people in my community and in the other communities in the county. I feel more connected living here and like I can start to get involved in volunteering in the community.

Youth Engagement: By involving young people in leadership training, helps young leaders feel connected to their community. Engaged youth are more likely to remain in or return to their rural communities, reversing trends of outmigration. McLeod For Tomorrow has done this by offering a Student leadership program. This program connects students across the county from all of the schools for a student leadership day. While the goal is not necessarily to keep kids here, creating a positive connection to their community in high school will only help them as they grow in their careers.
Bringing it all Together
Participating in a rural leadership program offers an opportunity that extends beyond individual growth. It empowers participants to become vessels for positive change, driving economic development, improving community well-being, and fostering sustainable practices. As these leaders emerge, they create a ripple effect that benefits not only their own communities but also serves as an inspiration and blueprint for others. By investing in rural leadership, we are investing in a brighter, more equitable future for all.
